Since posting about the third episode of “Rotten” last night, I was fortunate enough to receive an email from a farmer at Christopher Ranch and member of the Christopher family. I voiced my confusion about the situation to him, and he was gracious enough to explain their side of the story: which was not well represented in the episode, “Garlic Breath.”
Christopher told me about their company’s transparency and proved this through the information he provided to me. Not only did he tell me the Christopher Ranch company has never and will never use Chinese garlic, but he told me why and showed me testimony that he personally gave for anti-dumping tariffs. This is exactly the opposite of what they were portrayed as in the Netflix docuseries.
It is important to get every side to every story. Ken Christopher has shown me this is one story that was not told correctly. Even through my viewing of the episode, I was unsure about which side was in the right. I felt not all of the information was there. Like I said in my last blog post, I know I could not have told the Boxcar Farm and Avrum Katz what choice was the correct one. But Christopher provided a little more insight to this situation.
Christopher Ranch proudly employs transparency in all of their actions, they oppose illegally dumped Chinese garlic, and they treat their employees well – with one of the highest corporate minimum wages in the country, on-sight preschool, and health insurance for their employees.
