This week – as I have been doing every other week up until this point – I watched the next episode of the series, Rotten. However, this episode bothered me and made me reflect upon the series as a whole, so this post is going to be a little different.
“Milk Money” the fifth episode in the series seemed to me like there was no point. I almost could not finish the episode. Around halfway through, I felt as though they were telling me all about raw milk but nothing meant anything. They were telling me how bad it was proven to be but how good it was, but that the benefits had no proof so don’t listen to that, but wait the benefits are AMAZING so drink raw milk look at all these sad dairy farmers who aren’t making any money on pasteurized milk feel bad for them. From the beginning I was not a fan of the episode. They interviewed a mother and her son who almost died from raw milk and showed how awful raw milk can be. But as always, they finished up the episode with one of the farmers that they attempt to make you feel bad for.
Throughout this episode, I realized something. This series that I have been watching is not what I expected it to be. I thought it would be an expository environmental documentary series, much like documentaries I have watched in the past. However, all I have gotten from them is providing a platform for small farmers to show why people should be sad for them.
Not one second of this episode told me how AWFUL cow farms are for the environment. As a person who does everything I can to be as vegan/vegetarian as possible in my circumstances with an awareness of what these industries do to the environment, I wanted to watch documentaries that told me facts about what is happening to the environment.
That is not what this series is doing. Not only did this episode talk about raw milk with unproven benefits, but I am disappointed about the lack of representation of the environmental issues of the last two episodes.
I do not recommend watching this episode. Wait until I blog about Cowspiracy in a few weeks.
